What to Say for Small Talk Before an English Meeting Starts

Small talk in a second language has no script

In your own language, small talk is automatic. In English, the two minutes while people join the call can feel like the hardest part of the meeting, because there is no clear topic to hold onto.

Predictable beats clever

“How has your week been so far?” is a predictable, easy-to-answer opener, and that is exactly why it works better than a clever one. The other person can answer it instantly and the moment moves on naturally.

For hybrid teams, “Are you dialing in from the office today?” works just as well.

You do not need a good answer, just a quick one

“Busy, but good busy” is a fine reply. The point is not to say something memorable, it is to keep the exchange moving so the meeting can start on a warm note.
