A 1:1 without an agenda defaults to status updates
If you walk in with nothing prepared, the conversation naturally drifts toward “what did you do this week,” which is the least valuable use of dedicated time with your manager.
Bring one real question
“One thing I would like your input on is [topic].” Naming a specific ask turns the meeting from a check-in into a working session, and signals you came prepared.
Ask about growth directly
“Can we talk about my growth areas for this quarter?” This question rarely comes up unprompted. Asking it directly is what actually gets you a real answer instead of a vague “you are doing great.”
