Vague requests get vague answers

A soft opener like “I was wondering if maybe we could possibly talk about...” buries the actual ask. Managers respond to what is asked clearly, not what is hinted at.

Tie the ask to evidence

“Based on what I have delivered this year, I think a promotion conversation is timely.” Leading with delivered impact, not just tenure or effort, is what makes the ask land as a business conversation.

Ask what it would take, even if the answer is not yes today

“What would need to be true for us to revisit my level this year?” This keeps the conversation moving even if today is not the day, and puts a concrete target on the table instead of a vague “maybe later.”
